We need you to be part of a new experiment at UCSF. An experiment that involves our students and postdocs- thatÕs the substrate of our experiment and you as the faculty. What has necessitated this new need is a change in the way biomedical research is done and its potential impact in big societal changes. Not just in furthering knowledge, but in making urgent changes in health and environment, in education, and food and agriculture. We need be able to inform our students and postdocs of the range of opportunities and the ways that they can be involved. The ways that they can move into areas like communication and policy and law and business and education. In ways will impact all of these areas. We need PhD level trainees to occupy spaces in each of those endeavors. The problem is that we havenÕt provided our students and postdocs with the information they need to be able to make informed choices about the range of options. Well, you represent someone who has been able to traverse that space by yourself. No one gave you the help. We feel that itÕs now our responsibility to provide that new kind of information. WeÕre just faculty at UCSF; most of us have been in academia our entire lives, and so we really canÕt do it. So, itÕs you that we really need. We need you to become a part of the UCSF community in a way that will change the culture of biomedical research training.
